Using Technology to Learn About and Share the Christian Faith

One topic that I hear about from many different people is how technology, especially cellular phones, is a detriment to the person who is using the technology. For many reasons, using a cell phone too much each day and using it in certain ways can be a detriment. But it depends on how each individual uses the phone. For example, taking a picture of the Colorado Rocky Mountains and posting it on Instagram to show others a great picture of “God in Nature” would be a nice way to use one’s phone. Another example would be a person sharing a Scripture passage from his or her Bible app with a family member or friend to help that person with what that person is dealing with in life. If I were to continue with example after example of how technology can be used in these positive ways, my guess is that it would be a very long list.

The short list below gives you several ideas on how you, your church, or anyone else can use technology to evangelize and be a disciple of Jesus Christ. The forms of technology mentioned below can be used to educate, to inspire, and to inform others.

“What would happen if we turned back when we forget it, if we opened it more times a day, if we read the message of God contained in the Bible the way we read messages on our cellphones? What would happen if we always brought it with us, or at least a small pocket-sized Gospel? (Pope Francis)

“The internet can be used wisely to build a society which is healthy and open to sharing. Communication, wherever and however it takes place, has opened up broader horizons for many people. This is a gift of God which involves a great responsibility.” (Pope Francis)

Why Use Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and Other Social Media?

  • Make a positive difference in one’s life. “Lift up” our neighbor!
  • Share Scripture.
  • Share pictures – God in nature, life accomplishments, time-less moments.
  • Share your positive thoughts and short stories of encouragement.
  • Share breaking “Give God the Glory” news.
